Ezinne Abba, a fifth-year senior at Texas and a member of the fastest women's 4x100-meter relay in collegiate history at 41.89 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for the host Longhorns in the 100-meter dash, 200 meters and 4x100 relay at the NCAA Division 1 Championships June 8 and 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Abba, who transferred from Cal Berkeley, boasts an all-conditions personal-best 10.93 seconds in the 100 and a wind-legal 22.47 in the 200. She revisits her first experience competing at Mike A. Myers Stadium in March at the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and explains how significant the support has been from the Texas fans this year. Abba shares how special it will be to compete in three events for Texas after only racing in the 100 semifinals last year representing Cal at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She examines how meaningful it has been to train with Julien Alfred, Kevona Davis, Rhasidat Adeleke and Lanae Thomas in the Longhorns' sprint corps, and how valuable fall training and the indoor season was for her to build confidence in working with the group, in addition to Texas head coach Edrick Floreal. Abba analyzes how beneficial the mentorship and guidance of Floreal has been this year, along with how much the starts of her races has improved, and how profound his belief in her has been in achieving lifetime-best efforts in the 60, 100 and 200. She revisits her experiences at the Division 1 Indoor championship meet March 10 in Albuquerque, N.M., and how that provided additional motivation for Abba and the Longhorns during the outdoor season. Abba reflects on eclipsing the collegiate record on multiple occasions in the 4x100 relay, the first occasion coming at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with a 42.00 effort, then again May 14 in Oklahoma with a 41.89 performance at the Big 12 Championships. She also speaks about the confidence and belief gained from the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, and how Abba is looking to continue the momentum in Austin. Abba speaks about how profound it would be for Texas to capture its first women's team title in 2005, especially achieving the feat at home, in addition to looking ahead to racing July 6-9 at her first USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field, after having her national eligibility transferred from Nigeria in the fall.
