Anna Purchase, a senior at Cal Berkeley representing England and an All-American in the women's hammer throw, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 8 at the NCAA Division 1 Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Purchase is the No. 6 all-time collegiate hammer throw competitor at 239-6 (73.02m) and is scheduled to compete against Australian athlete and No. 5 performer in collegiate history Stephanie Ratcliffe, representing Harvard, and her 239-10 (73.11m) effort. Audrey Jacobs, a Dutch athlete, is also scheduled to represent the Golden Bears in the final. Purchase revisits the Division 1 West Regional competition in Sacramento and surpassing the 70-meter barrier again with a third-round mark of 230-6 (70.25m) and sharing how important it was to build confidence on her final throw entering the NCAA Championships. She expresses gratitude for her collaboration with Cal throws coach Mohamad Saatara, and explains how valuable his mentorship, guidance, insight and perspective have been since she transferred to Cal during the COVID-19 pandemic after beginning her collegiate career in Nebraska. Purchase also explains how meaningful her friendship and training have been with three-time NCAA champion and collegiate hammer throw record holder Camryn Rogers, who captured the silver medal last year representing Canada at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She also examines how inspiring it is to have Lithuanian athlete Mykolas Alekna competing in the discus throw for the Golden Bears and watching his improvement at age 20 to producing the collegiate record and securing the World Athletics Championships silver medal and European Athletics Championships gold medal last year. Purchase explains the lessons she learned last season following such a long year of competition and how important her mental health has been, in addition to how special it was to compete in front of family and friends at the Commonwealth Games in August in Birmingham. She analyzes the potential to extend Cal's championship streak to four in a row, which would make the Golden Bears the only women's program in Division 1 history to capture four hammer throw titles.
