Axelina Johansson, a Nebraska sophomore and the Swedish record holder at age 23 in the women's indoor and outdoor shot put along with being a two-time Big Ten Conference champion and All-American, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 8 in the NCAA Division 1 Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Johansson is the No. 2 all-time collegiate outdoor shot put competition at 64-1.25 (19.54m) from her performance May 13 at the Big Ten Championships in Indiana. She is also No. 3 in collegiate indoor history at 63-4 (19.30m). Johansson revisits the Big Ten final and producing three 19-meter marks in the same series, capped by her lifetime-best effort in the sixth round and eclipsing Fanny Roos' Swedish outdoor record. She examines the success of several elite Swedish throwers, including Emma Sralla, the national high school leader in the discus throw from Lewisville Marcus in Texas. Johansson also highlights the success of the Nebraska throwers, who will be represented by a pair of athletes in the finals of the women's shot put, women's javelin throw, men's shot put, men's discus throw and men's javelin throw in Austin. She speaks about the collaboration with Nebraska head coach Justin St. Clair, and how his guidance and insight and experience have benefited Johansson, especially in her second year training in Lincoln. Johansson analyzes the lessons learned last year after not only competing in her first collegiate season, but also training for the World Athletics Championships, along with the European Athletics Championships during the summer, and how that has contributed to her schedule this year in preparation for another World Championships in August in Hungary. She revisits her opportunity to compete April 29 in a rainstorm against American professional athletes Chase Ealey and Maggie Ewen, in addition to Jamaican record holder Danniel Thomas-Dodd at the 113th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and how those events have helped prepare her for the Division 1 outdoor championship meet, where Johansson will look to become the first Nebraska female athlete to capture the shot put crown since Becky Breisch in 2003.
