Wesley Kiptoo ran a 60-second first lap and never looked back Wednesday, with the Iowa State standout producing a dominant performance to achieve the facility record in the men’s 10,000 meters at the NCAA Division 1 West Regional at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas.

Kiptoo clocked 28:50.11 to eclipse the mark of 28;55.56 achieved May 13 at the Southeastern Conference Championships by Alabama’s Vincent Kiprop.

He prevailed by 20 seconds over the field, including Arkansas’ Gilbert Boit (29:10.36) and reigning Division 1 cross country champion Conner Mantz of Brigham Young (29:10.91), the collegiate leader this season at 27:41.16.

Edwin Kurgat of Iowa State also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., clocking 29:11.05.

Oklahoma State also had two athletes advance, with Isai Rodriguez running 29:11.15 and Victor Shitsama securing the final berth at 29:15.38.

Arizona State’s Turner Washington, the Division 1 indoor shot put champion, set the facility record with a mark of 68-0.50 (20.74m), leading four athletes over the 20-meter barrier.

Texas’ Adrian Piperi produced an effort of 66-4.50 (20.23m), Arizona’s Jordan Geist achieved a mark of 65-11.75 (20.11m) and Northern Iowa’s Darius King finished fourth at 65-10.50 (20.08m).

The final qualifier was USC’s Matthew Katnik at 62-4.50 (19.01m).

Kansas senior Gleb Dudarev, the 2019 Division 1 runner-up, produced the top throw in the men’s hammer at 234-8 (71.53m), with Minnesota freshman Kostas Zaltos also surpassing the 70-meter mark with a personal-best 232-11 (70.99m).

Geist also advanced in the hammer with a throw of 228-2 (69.56m), with fellow Pac-12 competitor Jayden White, a freshman at Washington, as the final qualifier at 213-6 (65.07m).

Kansas State senior Logan Wolfley led three athletes surpassing 70 meters in the men’s javelin with a throw of 237-6 (72.40m).

Brigham Young sophomore Cameron Bates produced a throw of 233-4 (71.13m) and Iowa State senior Scott Fuchs took third at 230-2 (70.16m). Stephen F. Austin freshman Izac Canchola was the final qualifier for nationals at 213-7 (65.10m).

Oklahoma’s Rayvon Allen and Texas’ Steffin McCarter were the only athletes to soar past the 8-meter mark in the long jump.

Allen achieved a wind-aided performance of 26-8.25 (8.13m) and McCarter had wind-legal effort of 26-4.25 (8.03m).

Texas Southern sophomore Kenneth Pree earned the final berth to Oregon by jumping 25-1.75 (7.66m).

Eleven athletes cleared 17-10.50 (5.45m) in the men’s pole vault, with Houston’s Christyan Sampy making 17-8.50 (5.40m) on his first attempt to earn the final qualifying berth.

USC junior Davonte Burnett ran a wind-aided 10.00 in the first round of the 100-meter dash.
