Washington State All-American Charisma Taylor, the Bahamian national indoor record holder in the triple jump at 44-8 (13.61m) and No. 4 all-time outdoors at 44-8.75 (13.63m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for the Cougars for the final time June 12 at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Taylor, who still has multiple seasons of eligibility remaining, will transfer as a graduate student-athlete to compete next year at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She expresses gratitude for her collaborations with jumps coach Doug Fraley and head coach Wayne Phipps, and shares how they have helped her elevate to one of the elite competitors, not only collegiately, but in the world. Taylor revisits her fifth-place finish March 13 at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., where she began her career in 2017 after graduating from the SPIRE Academy in the Bahamas. She shares how inspiring it was to have five athletes each competing for a different country, including champion Ruth Usoro of Texas Tech (Nigeria), runner-up Deborah Acquah of Texas A&M (Ghana), third-place Ruta Lasmane of Florida State (Latvia) and fourth-place Jasmine Moore of Georgia representing the United States. Taylor, a bronze medalist at the 2019 NACAC Under-23 Championships in Mexico and a finalist at the 2018 World Under-20 Championships in Finland, shares how grateful she is to be able to reunite with those same athletes, along with Natricia Hooper of Florida (Guyana), and have the opportunity to jump in front of fans at Hayward Field, where she has already competed multiple times this season without spectators. She also explains the vision and organization of her business, The Pastry Chateau, which Taylor began during the fall, and has continued throughout the pandemic, and she looks to continue the operation during the summer by creating desserts and bakery items. Taylor also speaks about the support and assistance provided by her family and how significant it was to have them attend her virtual graduation from Washington State in person. She also looks ahead to the Bahamian Championships at the end of June, in addition to a potential return to NACAC Under-23 competition July 9-11 in Costa Rica.
