Weber State senior Lexie Thompson, the Big Sky Conference champion and program record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss winning both titles at home in her final conference meet and preparing to race both events May 26-29 at the NCAA Division 1 West Regional at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas. Thompson, an American Fork High graduate, reflects on how significant it was to secure her first two outdoor championships after winning the indoor 3,000 crown in 2019. She also explains how meaningful it was to be able to achieve those goals in front of family, friends and teammates, especially after the 2020 outdoor season was canceled and the fact that Weber State still had the opportunity to host the championship meet this year in Ogden. Thompson revisits her first trip to Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on April 2 for the Hayward Premiere and running 32:49.62 in the 10,000 to eclipse the 2012 program record held by Sarah Callister. She shares the inspiration and motivation that trip created to return to Hayward Field for the NCAA Division 1 Championships on June 9-12, as well as possibly securing the Olympic Trials qualifying mark of 32:25.00, in order to have the potential to make another trip to Eugene for the June 26 final in the 25-lap event. Thompson revisits teammate and Division 1 cross country All-American Summer Allen running 15:59.34 in the 5,000 at the Hayward Premiere, and then breaking the record April 30 at the Oregon State High Performance meet by clocking 15:37.34. She analyzes the depth of the fields in both events, being ranked No. 4 in the West Region and ninth nationally in the 10,000, along with No. 6 in the region and 15th overall in the 5,000. Thompson reminisces about her 10,000 experience at the 2019 West Regional and how much she has improved and developed since. She also speaks about how her faith has continued to help her remain patient, resilient and persevering thoughout her career, which also includes her contributions in the radiology field and working as an X-ray technician and conducting MRIs.
